RIP (raster image processor)
A RIP converts page or image data into device-ready rasters and controls output responsibilities such as separations, screening, colour conversion, ink channels, media modes, queues, and printer communication. Capabilities vary by product and version. Prepress prepares a validated handoff; it does not replace the RIP’s device-control role.
In practice
A file that opens in a RIP is not necessarily ready. Verify physical size, scaling, colour, spot discovery, names, polarity, mirror state, screening, and the exact queue before a controlled print.
