Alpha threshold

An alpha threshold is the cutoff that separates pixels included in an opacity-derived mask from pixels excluded from it. On an 8-bit alpha scale, changing the cutoff decides whether faint edge or background pixels become white, varnish, visible content, or nothing. It does not repair the underlying colour artwork.

In practice

A low threshold preserves more soft content but can admit haze or removal residue. A high threshold rejects more faint pixels but can cut into antialiasing, shadows, distress, or smoke. The correct value depends on the approved art and the mask’s purpose.

NestSheet’s alpha-derived white controls work on a 0–255 scale, with a baseline threshold of 15. Treat that as a product starting point, then review the white preview and a controlled print rather than copying it as a universal DTF setting.
