Dithering
Dithering approximates intermediate tone values with patterns or distributions of discrete dots. Ordered dithering repeats a threshold matrix; error-diffusion methods pass quantisation error to neighbouring pixels; stochastic methods distribute dots probabilistically. The visible result depends on raster density, dot geometry, scale, substrate, ink, and the physical process.
In practice
Dithering can be used in artwork or in a white-underbase plane. Those are different responsibilities: changing colour artwork alters the visible design, while screening white changes backing coverage and hand feel beneath it.
Preview at 1:1 and print a controlled target. A browser proxy or zoomed thumbnail can hide dot size, moiré, broken fine detail, or the interaction between the chosen pattern and downstream screening.
