How this maths works

Three lines of arithmetic — no model, no benchmark, no hidden coefficients.

price per m² = price per linear metre ÷ roll width in metres

film at target = film per month × (current utilisation ÷ target utilisation)

saving = (film per month − film at target) × price per m²

Why the ratio works: the artwork you actually print is fixed — it is your monthly film multiplied by your current utilisation. Utilisation only changes how much film wraps around that artwork, so the same artwork at a higher utilisation needs proportionally less film. The saving is the film gap, priced at what you pay per m².

Both utilisation values are yours: the current one is an estimate you should measure, the target one is a scenario you want to test. The calculator never substitutes numbers of its own.

  2. Film needed at 80% 60 m² ÷ 80% = 75 m²

  4. Money 25 m² × $8.00 = $200 per month → $2,400 per year

Price conversion

Per-metre price to per-m² price

Film is usually quoted per linear metre or per roll; the calculator prices waste per m². The conversion is one division, keyed to the roll width.

Widths above are the builder’s roll presets; custom widths work the same way — a roll W millimetres wide covers W ÷ 1000 m² per linear metre. Priced per roll? Divide the roll price by its length first (see the FAQ).

How to measure your current utilisation

The result is only as honest as the first slider — so put a measured number on it, not a feeling.

  1. Take a recent sheet

    Pick a finished gang sheet you actually printed — the export file or the physical sheet both work. Note the sheet area: width × length.

  2. Sum the artwork on it

    Add up the area of the designs that printed. Rectangular bounding boxes are fine for a first pass — that matches how nesting software reserves space.

  3. Divide

    Utilisation = artwork area ÷ sheet area. In the NestSheet builder this figure is on screen the whole time — the bottom bar shows a live fill percentage for the sheet as it packs, so nesting a real batch on the free plan is the fastest honest measurement.

FAQ

Questions operators actually ask

Where do the savings numbers come from?
From your inputs and nothing else. The calculator multiplies the film you already run by the gap between your current and target utilisation, then prices that film. The full formula is printed on this page, and the worked example can be checked by hand.
How do I find my current utilisation?
Measure a recent sheet: add up the artwork area that actually printed and divide it by the sheet area you paid for. In the NestSheet builder the same figure shows live as the fill percentage while a sheet packs — the free plan is enough to check a real batch.
What target utilisation should I aim for?
We don’t publish a target — it depends on your artwork mix, design sizes and how much 0/90° rotation helps. The honest way to pick one: nest a real batch of your own files, read the fill percentage the sheet actually reaches, and put that number in the second slider.
My film is priced per roll, not per metre — what do I enter?
Divide the roll price by the roll length to get a per-linear-metre price: a 100 m roll bought for $450 is $4.50 per linear metre. The calculator converts that to a per-m² price using the roll width — the conversion table on this page shows the same maths.
Why do the hints count a sheet as 0.5 m²?
That is the convention NestSheet uses everywhere, including plan allowances: one gang sheet ≈ 0.5 m² of film — a 60 cm roll at roughly 83 cm of length. If your sheets are a different size, enter m² directly.
Does the calculator send my numbers anywhere?
No. It runs entirely in your browser — the calculator itself makes no network requests, so the prices and volumes you type never leave the page. The site around it runs Google Analytics behind a consent banner — cookies only if you accept, anonymised cookieless signals if you decline; your calculator inputs are not part of either.
